Breathing well is essential to maintain balance and function in our bodies. Sometimes due to a variety of factors including disease, allergies, anxiety or pain our breathing pattern can change and become less efficient. This can result in a number of symptoms including shortness of breath, headaches, tightness in the chest or dizziness. Physiotherapy can help to retrain your breathing which may help to improve these symptoms.

Being at the top of your sport requires all body systems to be functioning optimally. Optimizing your respiratory system through inspiratory muscle training can support you in reaching your peak performance.

Feeling short of breath or breathless can be uncomfortable and scary. It can be caused by an irritation in your lungs, reduced exercise tolerance or anxiety and fear. Physiotherapy can support you with strategies to recover from breathlessness and look at underlying causes such as respiratory muscle weakness to provide a targeted program to support your recovery.
-
Breathing muscles can become weak from a variety of factors including having a long period of being unwell, having a chronic respiratory disease or from breathing with an inefficient pattern. It is possible to train your breathing muscles like you do other muscles in your body with strength training. Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT) is a form of weight training for your breathing muscles.
It can be used by athletes to optimize their respiratory system for performance or can support recovery in respiratory disease to improve exercise tolerance and decrease breathlessness.
-
Coughing is a protective reflex for the airway but in some cases such as after an illness, an irritable dry cough can develop that is not of benefit and disrupt your quality of life. Physiotherapy can support you in using a mix of strategies to settle your cough.
-
Respiratory diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and bronchiectasis can cause an overproduction of mucus in your lungs which can be irritating causing coughing and discomfort. Physiotherapy can help you develop a personalized airway clearance program to help you effectively clear your secretions daily and remain well, potentially reducing the number of flare ups you have.
-
Conditions including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease (ILD) and asthma can all result in a host of symptoms that can impact quality of life including breathlessness, decreased exercise tolerance, dysfunctional breathing patterns, mucus retention and decreased quality of life. Physiotherapy can support you to manage your condition and its symptoms. We also provide rehabilitation prior to surgery for populations including those going under lung transplantation.

Surviving critical illness can result in many complications including reduced mobility, respiratory muscle weakness, loss of independence and decreased quality of life. Through personalized assessment and treatment, physiotherapy can support your recovery and goals following ICU admission.
